Dark matter and the fate of the universe
- 1 thing to know
- Papers 2 and 3
Overview
Recall questions on what dark matter is and the evidence for it, the critical density, how mean density decides the fate, and what distant supernovae revealed.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why is the value of the Hubble constant still disputed?
Model answer
It relies on measuring the distances to remote galaxies, which is very difficult and subject to large uncertainties, and different measurement methods give values that do not agree.
- 2
Why does an uncertain Hubble constant make the age of the universe uncertain?
Model answer
Because the estimated age is 1/H₀, so any percentage uncertainty in H₀ carries straight through to the age.
- 3
What is dark matter?
Model answer
It is matter that neither emits nor absorbs electromagnetic radiation, so it cannot be seen directly and is detected only through its gravitational effects.
- 4
What observational evidence suggests that dark matter exists?
Model answer
Stars in the outer parts of galaxies orbit far faster than the gravity of the visible matter alone could sustain, implying a great deal of unseen mass.
- 5
What is meant by the critical density of the universe?
Model answer
It is the mean density at which gravity is just sufficient to slow the expansion to zero after an infinite time, without ever reversing it.
- 6
How does the mean density of the universe determine its ultimate fate?
Model answer
Above the critical density gravity eventually halts and reverses the expansion into a collapse, below it the universe expands forever, and at exactly the critical density the expansion slows towards a standstill.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Space, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
