Measuring the speed of sound with an oscilloscope
- 2 things to know
- Papers 2 and 3
Overview
Recall questions on the signal generator and microphone arrangement, why a two-beam oscilloscope is used, the y-gain and time base, and the main uncertainties.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What are the main sources of uncertainty in the speed of sound determination, and how is an antinode identified on a displacement graph?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How can the speed of sound in air be determined using a signal generator, a loudspeaker, a microphone and a two-beam oscilloscope?
Model answer
Feed the signal generator output to one beam and the microphone output to the other, then move the microphone directly away from the speaker until the two traces return to being in phase; that displacement is one wavelength, and v = fλ.
- 2
Why is a two-beam oscilloscope used rather than a single-beam one in this experiment?
Model answer
It displays the source signal and the detected signal together, so the moment at which the two are back in phase can be judged directly.
- 3
How can the uncertainty in the wavelength measurement be reduced in this experiment?
Model answer
Move the microphone through several whole wavelengths, measure the total displacement, and divide by the number of wavelengths.
- 4
How can the frequency be obtained from the oscilloscope rather than trusting the signal generator dial?
Model answer
Measure the number of divisions for one complete cycle, multiply by the time-base setting to get the period, and take the frequency as f = 1/T.
- 5
An oscilloscope with a time base of 0.5 ms per division shows one complete cycle across 4.0 divisions. What is the frequency?
Model answer
The period is 4.0 × 0.5 = 2.0 ms, so the frequency is 1/(2.0 × 10⁻³) = 500 Hz.
- 6
In the speed of sound experiment the microphone is moved through 5 wavelengths in 77.5 cm at a frequency of 2.20 kHz. What is the speed of sound?
Model answer
The wavelength is 0.775/5 = 0.155 m, so v = 2200 × 0.155 = 341 m s⁻¹.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Waves and Particle Nature of Light, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
