Quark changes in beta decay and testing particle equations
- 2 things to know
- Papers 1 and 3
Overview
Recall questions on the quark change behind each beta decay, electron capture and annihilation equations, and deciding whether a proposed interaction is allowed.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is wrong with writing neutron decay as n to p plus an electron, and why is energy checked separately from quantum numbers?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Which change at quark level underlies beta-minus decay?
Model answer
A down quark changes into an up quark, converting udd into uud and so turning a neutron into a proton.
- 2
Which change at quark level underlies beta-plus decay?
Model answer
An up quark changes into a down quark, converting uud into udd and so turning a proton into a neutron.
- 3
Write the equation for electron capture and check that it is allowed:
Model answer
The equation is p + e⁻ → n + νₑ; charge is (+1) + (−1) = 0 on both sides, baryon number is +1 on both sides, and lepton number is +1 on both sides, so it is permitted.
- 4
Write the equation for the annihilation of an electron and a positron:
Model answer
The equation is e⁻ + e⁺ → γ + γ, with total charge and lepton number both zero on each side.
- 5
Write the equation for pair production of an electron and a positron from a photon:
Model answer
The equation is γ → e⁻ + e⁺, in which charge goes from 0 to zero overall and lepton number from 0 to (+1) + (−1) = 0.
- 6
Why is the interaction p + p → p + p + p impossible, while p + p → p + p + p + p̄ can occur?
Model answer
The first has baryon number 2 before and 3 after, which is forbidden, whereas the second has baryon number 2 before and 3 − 1 = 2 after and charge +2 on both sides, so it is allowed provided enough energy is available.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Nuclear and Particle Physics, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
