Describing a progressive wave
- 2 things to know
- Papers 2 and 3
Overview
Recall questions on amplitude, wavelength, frequency and period, why amplitude is not the peak-to-peak value, and how energy carried depends on amplitude.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the wave equation, and how are the frequency and period of a wave related?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a progressive wave?
Model answer
It is a disturbance that travels through space or a medium, transferring energy from one place to another without any net transfer of matter.
- 2
How is the amplitude of a wave defined?
Model answer
The amplitude is the maximum displacement of a point on the wave from its equilibrium position.
- 3
Why is the amplitude not the same as the peak-to-peak displacement shown on a trace?
Model answer
The peak-to-peak displacement runs from a crest right down to a trough, so it is twice the amplitude.
- 4
What is meant by the wavelength of a wave?
Model answer
The wavelength is the shortest distance between two points on the wave that are oscillating in phase, such as one crest and the next.
- 5
How is the frequency of a wave defined, and what is its unit?
Model answer
Frequency is the number of complete oscillations passing a point each second, measured in hertz (Hz).
- 6
What is meant by the period of a wave?
Model answer
The period is the time taken for one complete oscillation of a point on the wave.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Waves and Particle Nature of Light, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
