Reading period, amplitude and speed from oscillation graphs
- 1 thing to know
- Papers 2 and 3
Overview
Recall questions on obtaining period and amplitude accurately, estimating maximum speed from a gradient, what the area under a velocity-time graph gives, and how damping changes the trace.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How would you obtain the period accurately from a displacement–time graph?
Model answer
Measure the total time for several complete cycles between corresponding points, such as successive peaks, and divide by the number of cycles.
- 2
How do you read the amplitude from a displacement–time graph?
Model answer
It is the maximum displacement measured from the equilibrium position, which is the time axis, to a peak.
- 3
How could you estimate the maximum speed directly from a displacement–time graph?
Model answer
Draw a tangent to the curve where it crosses the time axis and calculate the gradient of that tangent.
- 4
What does the area under a velocity–time graph for an oscillator represent?
Model answer
It represents the displacement of the oscillator over that time interval.
- 5
How does the displacement–time graph of a lightly damped oscillator differ from that of an undamped one?
Model answer
The peaks get progressively smaller as the amplitude decays, while the period stays very nearly the same.
- 6
An oscillator's amplitude is doubled but its frequency is unchanged. How do its displacement–time and velocity–time graphs change?
Model answer
Both curves keep the same period and shape, but every peak value doubles, since the maximum speed Aω is proportional to amplitude.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Oscillations, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
