Interference in practice
- 1 thing to know
- Papers 2 and 3
Overview
Recall questions on the path and phase conditions for constructive and destructive interference, the two-loudspeaker experiment, and whether interference destroys energy.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Two coherent light waves of wavelength 600 nm meet with a path difference of 1.5 μm. Is the interference constructive or destructive?
Model answer
The path difference is 1500/600 = 2.5 wavelengths, an odd number of half wavelengths, so the interference is destructive.
- 2
What is heard at a point where two coherent sound waves of equal amplitude arrive exactly in antiphase?
Model answer
Nothing is heard, because the displacements cancel completely and the resultant amplitude is zero.
- 3
Why does walking along a line in front of two loudspeakers emitting the same note produce alternating loud and quiet regions?
Model answer
The two distances to the listener change at different rates, so the path difference cycles through whole and half-integer numbers of wavelengths, giving alternate constructive and destructive interference.
- 4
Two loudspeakers emitting the same note produce alternating loud and quiet points along a line in front of them. What happens to the spacing of the loud points if the frequency is increased?
Model answer
The wavelength becomes shorter, so a smaller change in path difference is needed between maxima and the loud points move closer together.
- 5
If one of the two loudspeakers is turned down, how does the interference pattern change?
Model answer
The positions of the maxima and minima are unaltered, but the minima are no longer silent because the amplitudes no longer cancel exactly.
- 6
Does destructive interference destroy energy?
Model answer
No, energy is conserved: the energy missing from the minima is redistributed into the maxima, which are brighter or louder than either wave alone.
