Viscosity, laminar flow and Stokes' law
- 1 thing to know
- Papers 2 and 3
Overview
Recall questions on what viscosity measures, Stokes' law and the conditions under which it holds, laminar and turbulent flow, and the effect of temperature.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is viscosity a measure of?
Model answer
Viscosity measures how strongly a fluid resists flowing, and so how large a drag force it exerts on an object moving through it.
- 2
State Stokes' law for the viscous drag on a sphere:
Model answer
F = 6πηrv, where η is the viscosity of the fluid, r the radius of the sphere and v its speed relative to the fluid.
- 3
What is the SI unit of viscosity?
Model answer
Viscosity is measured in pascal seconds, Pa s, which is the same as N s m⁻².
- 4
Under what conditions is Stokes' law valid?
Model answer
It holds only for a small sphere travelling slowly enough through the fluid for the flow around it to remain laminar.
- 5
What is laminar flow?
Model answer
Laminar flow is flow in which the fluid moves in smooth layers that do not cross or mix, with no eddies.
- 6
What happens to the drag force once the flow around an object becomes turbulent?
Model answer
Eddies form and the drag becomes much larger and is no longer proportional to speed, so Stokes' law can no longer be used.
Other ways to work this

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Materials, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
