The Stefan-Boltzmann law and stellar calculations
- 3 things to know
- Papers 2 and 3
Overview
Recall questions on the law and its constant, which area to use for a star, comparing stars of equal radius or equal temperature, and using both laws together.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What determines the power radiated per unit area of a black body, and how do the luminosities of two stars at the same temperature compare if one has three times the radius of the other?
Which area is used in the Stefan-Boltzmann law for a star, how do two stars of equal radius compare if one is twice as hot as the other, and why are the laws applied to stars?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the Stefan-Boltzmann law:
Model answer
The Stefan-Boltzmann law is L = σAT⁴.
- 2
In the Stefan-Boltzmann law, what does L represent and in what unit is it measured?
Model answer
L is the star's luminosity, the total radiant power it emits, measured in watts.
- 3
What is σ in the Stefan-Boltzmann law, and what is its value?
Model answer
It is the Stefan-Boltzmann constant, equal to 5.67 × 10⁻⁸ W m⁻² K⁻⁴.
- 4
What area A should be used in the Stefan-Boltzmann law for a star?
Model answer
The surface area of the star, taken as a sphere, so A = 4πr².
- 5
A star of radius 7.0 × 10⁸ m has a surface temperature of 5800 K. What is its luminosity?
Model answer
A = 4π(7.0 × 10⁸)² = 6.2 × 10¹⁸ m², so L = 5.67 × 10⁻⁸ × 6.2 × 10¹⁸ × 5800⁴ = 4.0 × 10²⁶ W.
- 6
Two stars have the same radius but one is twice as hot as the other. How do their luminosities compare?
Model answer
The hotter star is 2⁴ = 16 times more luminous, because luminosity is proportional to the fourth power of absolute temperature.
