Total internal reflection and measuring refractive index
- 2 things to know
- Papers 2 and 3
Overview
Recall questions on the two conditions for total internal reflection, sin C = 1/n, and the glass-block experiment with optical pins.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is a graph plotted rather than separate values averaged, and why should the optical pins be placed as far apart as possible?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the critical angle for a glass–air boundary where the glass has a refractive index of 1.50?
Model answer
sin C = 1/1.50 = 0.667, so the critical angle is 41.8°.
- 2
Light inside water of refractive index 1.33 strikes the water–air surface at 55° to the normal. Will it escape?
Model answer
The critical angle is sin⁻¹(1/1.33) = 48.8°, and 55° is greater than this, so total internal reflection occurs and the light does not escape.
- 3
Light in glass of refractive index 1.50 meets a boundary with water of refractive index 1.33 at 60° to the normal. Will it be totally internally reflected?
Model answer
The critical angle is sin⁻¹(1.33/1.50) = 62.5°, and 60° is less than this, so the light is refracted into the water, bending away from the normal.
- 4
What does a small critical angle tell you about a material?
Model answer
It has a high refractive index, so total internal reflection takes place over a wide range of angles of incidence.
- 5
As the angle of incidence in the denser medium approaches the critical angle, what happens to the brightness of the refracted ray?
Model answer
It becomes progressively fainter as an increasing fraction of the light is partially reflected, and it disappears altogether beyond the critical angle.
- 6
How can the refractive index of a rectangular glass block be measured?
Model answer
Trace the outline of the block on plain card, direct a narrow ray into one face at a measured angle to the normal, mark the incident and emergent rays with optical pins, then remove the block and measure the angle of refraction inside it; repeat for several angles of incidence.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Waves and Particle Nature of Light, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
