Geo-engineering, direct air capture and bio-photovoltaics
- 3 things to know
- A2 1
Overview
Geo-engineering methods, their potential and risks, solar radiation management and afforestation, direct air capture, and how bio-photovoltaic cells generate electricity, their limits and uses in remote places.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give two examples of proposed geo-engineering methods.
What are the potential advantages of geo-engineering?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is geo-engineering?
Model answer
Geo-engineering is the deliberate, large-scale modification of the Earth's climate system to offset climate change. Geo-engineering aims to reduce warming rather than emissions.
- 2
Give two examples of proposed geo-engineering methods.
Model answer
Solar radiation management would reflect sunlight away, for example by releasing aerosols high in the atmosphere. Ocean fertilisation would encourage plankton to absorb more carbon dioxide.
- 3
What are the potential advantages of geo-engineering?
Model answer
Geo-engineering could reduce global temperatures faster than cutting emissions alone. Geo-engineering might buy time while low-carbon technologies are developed.
- 4
What are the risks of geo-engineering?
Model answer
Geo-engineering could disrupt rainfall patterns and harm regions that did not choose it. Stopping solar radiation management suddenly could cause rapid warming.
- 5
What are bio-photovoltaics?
Model answer
Bio-photovoltaics use living photosynthetic organisms such as green algae to generate electricity. The cells release electrons during photosynthesis, which an electrode collects.
- 6
How do bio-photovoltaic cells produce electricity?
Model answer
Algae on an anode release electrons as they photosynthesise in light. The electrons flow through an external circuit to a cathode, producing a small current.
