Biodegradable, photodegradable and compostable plastics
- 3 things to know
- AS 1
Overview
Biodegradable, photodegradable, compostable and oxo-degradable plastics, starch and pro-oxidant additives, the EU ban, compostable plastics and soil, mulch films, packaging and labels, and problems in recycling and littering.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a photodegradable plastic?
What is a compostable plastic?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the term biodegradable plastic.
Model answer
A biodegradable plastic is one that micro-organisms can break down into carbon dioxide, water and biomass. The rate depends on conditions such as temperature, moisture and oxygen.
- 2
What is a photodegradable plastic?
Model answer
A photodegradable plastic is designed to break down when exposed to the ultraviolet light in sunlight. The light breaks bonds in the polymer chains, so the plastic becomes brittle and crumbles.
- 3
What is a compostable plastic?
Model answer
A compostable plastic breaks down completely under composting conditions within a set time, leaving no toxic residue. The European standard EN 13432 requires 90% biodegradation within six months.
- 4
How does adding starch to polyethylene affect its breakdown?
Model answer
Micro-organisms digest the starch, leaving the plastic weakened and full of holes. The plastic then falls apart into fragments, although the polyethylene itself still degrades slowly.
- 5
What are pro-oxidant additives?
Model answer
Pro-oxidant additives are salts of metals such as iron, manganese or cobalt mixed into a polymer. The additives speed up oxidation by heat and light, which shortens the polymer chains.
- 6
How can the manufacturing process be modified to make a plastic more photodegradable?
Model answer
Light-sensitive carbonyl groups can be built into the polymer chain during manufacture. Carbonyl groups absorb ultraviolet light, and the chain snaps next to them.
