Choosing an investigation and its variables
- 3 things to know
- AS 2
Overview
Independent, dependent and control variables, wind, solar and biomass investigations, a moisture content calculation, hypotheses, the range of values, pilot studies, and why fans and lamps are used indoors.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What makes a practical investigation into a renewable energy technology appropriate?
Define the independent variable in an investigation.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What makes a practical investigation into a renewable energy technology appropriate?
Model answer
An appropriate investigation tests a clear, measurable question about how a technology performs. The investigation must be safe, possible with the available apparatus and relevant to a real decision.
- 2
Define the independent variable in an investigation.
Model answer
The independent variable is the factor the investigator deliberately changes. In a model wind turbine test, blade number or wind speed could be the independent variable.
- 3
Define the dependent variable in an investigation.
Model answer
The dependent variable is the factor measured to see how it responds to the change. The power output of a turbine or panel is a typical dependent variable.
- 4
What are control variables, and why do they matter?
Model answer
Control variables are factors kept constant so that only the independent variable affects the result. Control variables make the investigation a fair test.
- 5
Suggest an investigation into how blade pitch affects the output of a model wind turbine.
Model answer
The blades are set at angles such as 10°, 20°, 30° and 40°, and the power output is measured at each. Wind speed, blade number and fan distance are kept constant.
- 6
Identify the variables in an investigation into how light intensity affects the output of a photovoltaic panel.
Model answer
Light intensity is the independent variable, changed by moving a lamp and checked with a light meter. Power output is the dependent variable. Panel angle, temperature and load resistance are controlled.
