Energy, carbon dioxide and water categories
- 3 things to know
- A2 2
Overview
The dwelling emission rate, heat loss, U-values and a wall heat loss calculation, low and zero carbon technologies, drying space and external lighting, water use targets, reducing and measuring water use, and a shower flow calculation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the dwelling emission rate?
How is a home's heat loss reduced to improve its energy rating?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does the energy and carbon dioxide emissions category assess?
Model answer
The category assesses how much carbon dioxide a home emits from its energy use. The category also credits efficient lighting, drying space and low or zero carbon technologies.
- 2
What is the dwelling emission rate?
Model answer
The dwelling emission rate is a home's calculated carbon dioxide emissions per square metre of floor area per year. A lower rate means a more efficient home.
- 3
How is a home's heat loss reduced to improve its energy rating?
Model answer
Higher insulation, better windows and airtight construction reduce heat loss through the fabric. Lower heat loss means less energy is needed for heating.
- 4
What is a U-value?
Model answer
A U-value measures how much heat passes through one square metre of a building element for each degree of temperature difference. A lower U-value means better insulation.
- 5
A wall of 20 m² has a U-value of 0.3 W/m²K. How much heat is lost when the inside is 18°C warmer than outside?
Model answer
The wall loses 108 W of heat. The working is 0.3 × 20 × 18 = 108 W.
- 6
Why does the energy category credit low or zero carbon technologies?
Model answer
Technologies such as solar panels and heat pumps supply energy with little or no carbon dioxide. Generation on site lowers the home's overall emissions.
