The heat pump cycle and coefficient of performance
- 3 things to know
- AS 1
Overview
The refrigerant, evaporator, compressor, condenser and expansion valve, one full cycle, the refrigerator as a heat pump, coefficient of performance and its calculations, and why COP falls with a larger temperature lift.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Demonstrate how a heat pump works by describing one full cycle of the refrigerant.
What is a heat pump?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a heat pump?
Model answer
A heat pump is a device that moves heat from a cooler place to a warmer one. The pump uses electrical energy to drive the transfer.
- 2
Why does a heat pump need an energy input to work?
Model answer
Heat flows naturally only from a hotter body to a colder one. Work must be done to move heat the other way, from cold outside to a warm home.
- 3
What is the role of the refrigerant in a heat pump?
Model answer
The refrigerant is a fluid with a very low boiling point that circulates in a sealed loop. The refrigerant absorbs heat as it evaporates and releases heat as it condenses.
- 4
What is the role of the evaporator in a heat pump?
Model answer
The evaporator is where cold, low-pressure liquid refrigerant absorbs heat from the air or ground. The refrigerant boils into a low-pressure gas.
- 5
What is the role of the compressor in a heat pump?
Model answer
The electrically driven compressor squeezes the refrigerant gas to a high pressure. The compression raises the gas's temperature well above that of the heating system.
- 6
What is the role of the condenser in a heat pump?
Model answer
The condenser is where hot, high-pressure refrigerant gas gives up its heat to the heating system. The refrigerant condenses back into a liquid.
