Evaluating a method and site-based recommendations
- 3 things to know
- AS 2
Overview
Evaluating a method, scaling from models, the limits of lamps as sunlight, improving a biomass investigation, the site features that suit wind, solar and biomass, anemometer and payback calculations, and a justified recommendation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Suggest improvements to an investigation comparing the energy released by biomass fuels.
What does evaluating the method of an investigation involve?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does evaluating the method of an investigation involve?
Model answer
An evaluation identifies weaknesses in the apparatus, measurements and control of variables. An evaluation explains how each weakness affected the results and suggests specific improvements.
- 2
Why might results from a model wind turbine not apply to a full-size turbine?
Model answer
A model works at small scale, where friction and generator losses are relatively large. A fan's airflow is also more turbulent and uneven than real wind.
- 3
What are the limitations of using a lamp to model sunlight?
Model answer
A lamp's spectrum and intensity differ from sunlight, and its light spreads unevenly across the panel. A lamp also heats the panel, reducing its efficiency.
- 4
Evaluate an investigation that measured photovoltaic output with a desk lamp at different distances, taking one reading at each distance.
Model answer
The method is simple and the lamp gives controllable light. Single readings cannot reveal anomalies, and the lamp heats the panel as it moves closer. Repeats, a light meter and cooling breaks would improve reliability.
- 5
Suggest improvements to an investigation comparing the energy released by biomass fuels.
Model answer
Insulation, a draught shield and a lid would reduce heat loss. Samples should be fully dried and of equal mass. A bomb calorimeter would give far more accurate energy values.
- 6
How do the results of a practical investigation and desktop research support each other?
Model answer
Practical results show how a technology behaves under controlled conditions. Desktop research supplies real-world data on cost, output and impacts, which tests whether the practical trends hold at full scale.
