Types of photovoltaic module compared
- 3 things to know
- AS 1
Overview
Monocrystalline, polycrystalline, thin-film and thick-film modules, how they are made, their efficiency ranking, cost and longevity, where each suits, and panel efficiency and output calculations.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Evaluate thin-film modules as an alternative to crystalline silicon.
Name the four material types of PV module.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name the four material types of PV module.
Model answer
The four types are monocrystalline, polycrystalline, thick-film and thin-film modules.
- 2
How are monocrystalline cells made?
Model answer
Monocrystalline cells are sliced from a single large crystal of pure silicon grown slowly from molten silicon. The cells look uniformly black, often with cut-off corners.
- 3
How are polycrystalline cells made?
Model answer
Polycrystalline cells are cut from blocks of silicon cast in a mould and cooled, so many crystals form. The grain boundaries give a speckled blue appearance.
- 4
Why are monocrystalline cells more efficient than polycrystalline cells?
Model answer
A single crystal has no grain boundaries, where freed electrons and holes can recombine and be lost. More charge carriers reach the contacts, so more light becomes electricity.
- 5
What is a thin-film PV module?
Model answer
A thin-film module is made by depositing a layer of semiconductor only a few micrometres thick onto glass, metal or plastic. Amorphous silicon, cadmium telluride and CIGS are common materials.
- 6
What is a thick-film PV module?
Model answer
A thick-film module uses a layer of silicon tens of micrometres thick deposited on a low-cost supporting substrate. The design uses far less silicon than a sawn wafer but more than thin-film.
