Recycling at a Materials Recovery Facility
- 3 things to know
- A2 1
Overview
Clean and dirty MRFs, trommel screens, paper separation, overband magnets and eddy current separators, plastic sorting, glass, aluminium and paper recycling, reprocessing, and contamination with a worked rate.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the difference between a clean MRF and a dirty MRF?
What happens when collected recyclables first arrive at an MRF?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)?
Model answer
A Materials Recovery Facility is a plant that sorts mixed recyclable waste into separate materials. The sorted materials are baled and sold to reprocessors.
- 2
What is the difference between a clean MRF and a dirty MRF?
Model answer
A clean MRF sorts recyclables that households have already separated from general waste. A dirty MRF recovers recyclables from mixed residual waste, giving lower-quality material.
- 3
What happens when collected recyclables first arrive at an MRF?
Model answer
Collection vehicles tip loads onto a reception floor, and loaders feed them onto conveyors. Workers at a pre-sort station pick out large items and contaminants such as film and textiles.
- 4
How does a trommel screen separate materials in an MRF?
Model answer
A trommel is a rotating drum with holes in its wall. Small items fall through the holes while larger items pass along the drum.
- 5
How is paper separated from containers in an MRF?
Model answer
Disc screens or a ballistic separator send flat, light paper and card one way. Heavier, rounded containers such as cans and bottles roll or bounce the other way.
- 6
How are steel cans removed from the recycling stream?
Model answer
An overband magnet above the conveyor lifts out steel cans because steel is ferrous. The steel is then baled for reprocessing.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
