Fossil fuel combustion and the IPCC evidence
- 3 things to know
- AS 1
Overview
The IPCC, the natural and enhanced greenhouse effect, rising carbon dioxide, the isotope and upper-atmosphere evidence, climate models and sensitivity, observed changes, the Sixth Assessment Report and its uncertainties.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)?
Why does the IPCC carry weight as a source of evidence?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)?
Model answer
The IPCC is a United Nations body set up in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization and UNEP. The IPCC assesses published climate research and reports on its causes, impacts and responses.
- 2
Why does the IPCC carry weight as a source of evidence?
Model answer
The IPCC does not carry out its own research but assesses thousands of peer-reviewed studies. Governments approve its summaries line by line, so its conclusions reflect broad scientific consensus.
- 3
How does carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels warm the Earth?
Model answer
The Earth's surface emits infrared radiation, and carbon dioxide molecules absorb and re-emit some of it. Extra CO₂ traps more heat in the lower atmosphere, raising average temperatures.
- 4
What is the difference between the natural greenhouse effect and the enhanced greenhouse effect?
Model answer
The natural greenhouse effect keeps the Earth about 33°C warmer than it would otherwise be. The enhanced greenhouse effect is the extra warming caused by greenhouse gases added by human activity.
- 5
How has atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration changed since industrialisation?
Model answer
Carbon dioxide has risen from about 280 ppm before industrialisation to about 410 ppm in 2019. The IPCC reported that 2019 levels were higher than at any time in at least 2 million years (IPCC AR6, 2021).
- 6
How do scientists know that the extra carbon dioxide comes from fossil fuels?
Model answer
Fossil carbon contains no carbon-14 and is depleted in carbon-13. The atmosphere's isotope ratios have shifted in exactly that direction as CO₂ has risen.
