Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What electrolyte does an alkaline fuel cell use, and which ion carries the charge?

    Model answer

An alkaline fuel cell uses potassium hydroxide solution as its electrolyte. Hydroxide ions, OH⁻, move through it from the cathode to the anode.

  2. 2

Give the half-equations for an alkaline fuel cell.

    Model answer

    The anode reaction is H₂ + 2OH⁻ → 2H₂O + 2e⁻. The cathode reaction is O₂ + 2H₂O + 4e⁻ → 4OH⁻.

  3. 3

Why is an alkaline fuel cell damaged by carbon dioxide?

    Model answer

Carbon dioxide reacts with the hydroxide electrolyte to form potassium carbonate. The carbonate clogs the electrolyte and electrodes, so the cell needs pure oxygen or air scrubbed of carbon dioxide.

  4. 4

Where have alkaline fuel cells been used successfully?

    Model answer

Alkaline fuel cells powered the Apollo spacecraft and the Space Shuttle. The cells supplied electricity, and the water they made was used by the crew.

  5. 5

What advantage does an alkaline fuel cell have over a PEM cell?

    Model answer

The alkaline cell's electrode reactions are fast, so cheaper catalysts such as nickel can replace platinum. Alkaline cells can also reach high electrical efficiencies.

  6. 6

What is the electrolyte in a phosphoric acid fuel cell?

    Model answer

The electrolyte is concentrated liquid phosphoric acid held in a porous silicon carbide matrix. Hydrogen ions carry the charge, as in a PEM cell.
