- AS 2
Overview
Anemometers, multimeters and load resistors, light meters, can and bomb calorimeters, data loggers, hazard and risk, risk assessment, and controlling turbine, burning, lamp, electrical and outdoor hazards.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does a cup anemometer work?
How is a multimeter connected to measure the voltage and current from a model turbine?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does an anemometer measure, and how is it used in a wind investigation?
Model answer
An anemometer measures wind speed, usually in metres per second. An anemometer is held at the turbine's position to set and record the wind speed from a fan.
- 2
How does a cup anemometer work?
Model answer
The wind pushes a set of cups round, and the rotation rate rises with wind speed. A sensor converts the rotation rate into a speed reading.
- 3
How is a multimeter connected to measure the voltage and current from a model turbine?
Model answer
A multimeter set as a voltmeter is connected in parallel across the load. A multimeter set as an ammeter is connected in series with the load.
- 4
Why is a load resistor connected to a model turbine or photovoltaic panel during testing?
Model answer
A generator or panel only delivers power when current flows through a load. A fixed load keeps conditions the same, so power readings can be compared.
- 5
What does a light meter measure in a solar investigation?
Model answer
A light meter measures light intensity, usually in lux. A light meter placed where the panel sits records the light the panel receives in each test.
- 6
What is a calorimeter used for in a biomass investigation?
Model answer
A calorimeter measures the energy released when a fuel burns. The burning fuel heats a known mass of water, and the temperature rise gives the energy released.
