Hydrogen Fuel Cells
How a fuel cell works and the PEM cell
- 3 things to know
- A2 1
Overview
What a fuel cell is and how it differs from a battery, efficiency against engines, the redox reaction, the PEM cell's electrolyte, half-equations and operating temperature, hydrogen purity, stacks, and model fuel cell calculations.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a fuel cell?
How does a fuel cell differ from a battery?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a fuel cell?
Model answer
A fuel cell is an electrochemical device that converts the chemical energy of a fuel directly into electrical energy. A fuel cell keeps working as long as fuel and oxygen are supplied.
- 2
How does a fuel cell differ from a battery?
Model answer
A battery stores a fixed amount of chemical energy and runs down. A fuel cell has its reactants fed in continuously, so it never needs recharging.
- 3
Why can a fuel cell be more efficient than a petrol engine?
Model answer
A fuel cell converts chemical energy straight into electricity with no combustion step. A heat engine must turn heat into motion, and much of the fuel's energy is lost as waste heat.
- 4
Describe the basic structure of a hydrogen fuel cell.
Model answer
A fuel cell has an anode and a cathode separated by an electrolyte. Hydrogen is fed to the anode and oxygen or air to the cathode. An external circuit links the two electrodes.
- 5
Explain why the reaction in a hydrogen fuel cell is a redox reaction.
Model answer
Hydrogen is oxidised at the anode, losing electrons as its oxidation state rises from 0 to +1. Oxygen is reduced at the cathode, gaining electrons as its oxidation state falls from 0 to −2.
- 6
What is the electrolyte in a PEM fuel cell?
Model answer
The electrolyte is a thin solid polymer membrane that conducts hydrogen ions. The membrane blocks electrons and gases, so the electrons must travel round the external circuit.
