Fossil fuel demand, emerging economies and fuel security
- 3 things to know
- AS 1
Overview
Falling coal, oil and gas use in western countries, the BRIC economies and China's demand, the 2008 oil price, fuel security in Northern Ireland, the 1973 crisis, Ukraine in 2022 and the Strait of Hormuz.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.

Why did coal use fall so sharply in the UK electricity sector?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe the trend in coal use in industrialised western countries.
Model answer
Coal use in western countries has fallen steeply since the 1990s as power stations switched to gas and renewables. The UK closed its last coal power station, Ratcliffe-on-Soar, in September 2024.
- 2
Why did coal use fall so sharply in the UK electricity sector?
Model answer
North Sea gas, a carbon price floor from 2013 and rapid growth in wind power all made coal uncompetitive. Tighter air pollution limits closed older plants.
- 3
Describe the trend in oil and gas use in industrialised western countries.
Model answer
Oil use has levelled off and begun to fall slowly as vehicles become more efficient and electric. Gas replaced coal for power and heating but is now also declining as renewables grow.
- 4
Why has fossil fuel use in western countries fallen while their economies have grown?
Model answer
Energy efficiency has improved and renewables have replaced fossil electricity. Much heavy manufacturing has also moved to Asia, so some emissions are now embodied in imports.
- 5
What are the BRIC economies?
Model answer
BRIC refers to Brazil, Russia, India and China, large emerging economies with fast-growing industry and energy demand. The term BRIC was coined by the economist Jim O'Neill in 2001.
- 6
How has China's growth affected global demand for fossil fuels?
Model answer
China is the world's largest energy consumer and burns more than half of the world's coal (IEA, Coal 2023). China overtook the United States as the largest emitter of carbon dioxide in about 2006.
