Pumped hydro and compressed air energy storage
- 3 things to know
- AS 1
Overview
How pumped hydro works, a stored energy calculation, reversible pump-turbines and round-trip efficiency, Turlough Hill, compressed air storage, diabatic and adiabatic designs, caverns, Huntorf and McIntosh, and the Larne proposal.
What you need to know

- 1
Outline how pumped hydro storage works.
Model answer
Surplus electricity drives pumps that lift water from a lower reservoir to an upper one. When power is needed, the water flows back down through turbines that drive generators.
- 2
In what form does pumped hydro storage hold energy?
Model answer
Pumped hydro stores energy as the gravitational potential energy of water in the upper reservoir. The energy stored equals mgh, the mass of water times g times the height difference.
- 3
Calculate the energy stored by 1,000,000 m³ of water raised through 500 m, taking g as 9.81 N/kg and the density of water as 1,000 kg/m³.
Model answer
The water stores about 4.9 × 10¹² J, or about 1.36 GWh. The mass is 1 × 10⁹ kg, and 1 × 10⁹ × 9.81 × 500 = 4.9 × 10¹² J. One GWh is 3.6 × 10¹² J, so the store holds 1.36 GWh.
- 4
Why do pumped hydro stations use reversible pump-turbines?
Model answer
A single machine can pump water uphill when driven as a motor and generate electricity when water flows back through it. One set of machinery reduces cost and space.
- 5
What is the typical round-trip efficiency of pumped hydro storage?
Model answer
Pumped hydro typically returns about 70–80% of the energy used to pump the water. Losses occur in pumps, turbines, pipes and generators.
- 6
Why is pumped hydro valuable for meeting sudden surges in demand?
Model answer
Generation can begin within seconds to minutes because the water is already held above the turbines. Dinorwig in Wales can reach its full output of about 1.7 GW in well under a minute.
