Environmental impacts of fossil fuel use
- 3 things to know
- AS 1
Overview
Habitat degradation, mountaintop removal, oil spills, acid rain and climate change as threats to biodiversity, air pollutants and particulates, the Great Smog of 1952, acid mine drainage, Aberfan and external costs.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is mountaintop removal mining?
How do oil spills affect biodiversity?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does fossil fuel extraction cause habitat degradation?
Model answer
Open-cast mining and tar sand extraction strip vegetation and soil from large areas. Wells, pipelines and roads fragment the remaining habitat.
- 2
What is mountaintop removal mining?
Model answer
Mountaintop removal is a coal-mining method in the Appalachian region of the USA that blasts away hilltops to expose coal seams. The waste rock is dumped into valleys, burying streams.
- 3
How do oil spills affect biodiversity?
Model answer
Oil coats the feathers of seabirds and the fur of mammals, destroying insulation and buoyancy. Toxic compounds poison fish, shellfish and plankton, and coastal habitats can take decades to recover.
- 4
Give two major oil spills and where they occurred.
Model answer
The Exxon Valdez spilled oil into Prince William Sound, Alaska, in 1989. The Deepwater Horizon blowout polluted the Gulf of Mexico in 2010.
- 5
How does acid rain from fossil fuel combustion harm biodiversity?
Model answer
Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides from burning fossil fuels dissolve in rain to form acids. Acidified lakes lose fish and invertebrates, and forests are damaged as soil nutrients leach away.
- 6
How does climate change caused by fossil fuels threaten biodiversity?
Model answer
Warming shifts climate zones faster than many species can move or adapt. Ocean acidification from dissolved CO₂ also weakens the shells and skeletons of corals and shellfish.
