Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
When and by whom was BREEAM launched?
Model answer
BREEAM was launched in the UK in 1990 by the Building Research Establishment. BREEAM was one of the first environmental assessment methods for buildings.
- 2
What ratings can BREEAM award?
Model answer
BREEAM ratings are Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellent and Outstanding. A building that scores too low is unclassified.
- 3
How is a BREEAM score calculated?
Model answer
Credits are awarded in each category and turned into a percentage for that category. The category percentages are weighted and added to give the final score and rating.
- 4
Name the main categories that BREEAM assesses.
Model answer
BREEAM assesses management, health and wellbeing, energy, transport, water and materials. BREEAM also assesses waste, land use and ecology, and pollution, with extra credits for innovation.
- 5
Why does BREEAM assess transport as well as the building itself?
Model answer
A building's location decides how its occupants travel to it. A site near public transport and cycle routes cuts travel emissions over the building's life.
- 6
What benefits does a high BREEAM rating bring to a building's owner?
Model answer
A high rating can lower running costs and attract tenants who want sustainable premises. A high rating can also raise the building's value and help it gain planning approval.
