Overview

Recall questions on triglycerides and ester bonds, saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, phospholipids and the bilayer, the fluid mosaic model with intrinsic and extrinsic proteins, cholesterol, glycolipids and glycoproteins, and why membranes leak above about 40 °C.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is a triglyceride made of?

    Model answer

A triglyceride consists of one glycerol molecule joined to three fatty acids by ester bonds.

  2. 2

How is an ester bond formed between glycerol and a fatty acid?

    Model answer

By a condensation reaction between a hydroxyl group of the glycerol and the carboxyl group of the fatty acid, releasing one molecule of water.

  3. 3

What is the difference between a saturated and an unsaturated fatty acid?

    Model answer

A saturated fatty acid has no carbon-to-carbon double bonds in its hydrocarbon chain, whereas an unsaturated fatty acid has one or more, each producing a kink in the chain.

  4. 4

Why is a membrane rich in unsaturated fatty acid tails more fluid?

    Model answer

The kinks caused by the double bonds stop the tails packing closely together, so the phospholipids can move past one another more easily.

  5. 5

Give two reasons why triglycerides make good energy stores.

    Model answer

They contain a high proportion of carbon–hydrogen bonds, so oxidising them releases about twice as much energy per gram as carbohydrate, and being insoluble they can be stored in compact droplets without affecting the water potential of the cell.

  6. 6

How does the structure of a phospholipid differ from that of a triglyceride?

    Model answer

In a phospholipid one of the three fatty acids is replaced by a phosphate group, so the molecule has two hydrocarbon tails and a charged head.
