Overview
Recall questions on the P wave, QRS complex and T wave of an ECG, calculating heart rate, tachycardia and bradycardia, S-T elevation, ventricular and atrial fibrillation, first aid and aspirin for a heart attack, cardiac arrest and CPR, and how a defibrillator works.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What does the P wave of an ECG represent?
What does the QRS complex of an ECG represent?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does an electrocardiogram record?
Model answer
It records the electrical activity of the heart, picked up by electrodes placed on the skin as the excitation spreads through the body tissues.
- 2
What does the P wave of an ECG represent?
Model answer
The depolarisation of the atria, which brings about atrial contraction.
- 3
What does the QRS complex of an ECG represent?
Model answer
The depolarisation of the ventricles, which brings about ventricular contraction.
- 4
What does the T wave of an ECG represent?
Model answer
The repolarisation of the ventricles as they recover during diastole.
- 5
Why is atrial repolarisation not visible on a normal ECG trace?
Model answer
It occurs at the same time as the much larger QRS complex, so its small signal is hidden within it.
- 6
The interval between successive R peaks on an ECG is 0.75 s. Calculate the heart rate in beats per minute.
Model answer
The heart rate is 60 ÷ 0.75 = 80 beats per minute.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in The Heart and Monitoring Heart Function, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
