The nephron: ultrafiltration and selective reabsorption
- 3 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on the parts of the nephron, ultrafiltration through endothelium, basement membrane and podocytes, what glomerular filtrate contains, reabsorption of glucose by co-transport in the proximal convoluted tubule, the loop of Henle and collecting duct, and the distal convoluted tubule.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Name, in the order the filtrate passes through them, the parts of a nephron.
Which parts of a nephron lie in the cortex and which extend into the medulla?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name, in the order the filtrate passes through them, the parts of a nephron.
Model answer
The Bowman's capsule, the proximal convoluted tubule, the loop of Henle, the distal convoluted tubule and the collecting duct.
- 2
Which parts of a nephron lie in the cortex and which extend into the medulla?
Model answer
The Bowman's capsule and both convoluted tubules lie in the cortex, while the loop of Henle and the collecting duct extend down into the medulla.
- 3
Why is the hydrostatic pressure inside the glomerular capillaries so high?
Model answer
The afferent arteriole bringing blood into the glomerulus has a wider lumen than the efferent arteriole taking it away, so blood is forced towards a narrower exit and the pressure inside builds up, and it is this pressure that drives ultrafiltration.
- 4
Name the three layers a substance must cross to pass from the blood in the glomerulus into the Bowman's capsule.
Model answer
The fenestrated endothelium of the capillary, the basement membrane, and the filtration slits between the podocytes.
- 5
How are podocytes adapted to their role?
Model answer
They have finger-like extensions that wrap around the capillary and leave narrow filtration slits between them, so filtrate passes freely into the capsule without the cells forming a complete barrier.
- 6
Name four substances present in glomerular filtrate.
Model answer
Water, glucose, amino acids and urea.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Kidney Functions and Malfunctions, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
