The Developing Individual: Meiosis, Growth and Development
The stages of meiosis
- 3 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on the interphase before meiosis, the events of prophase 1 and bivalent formation, what separates at each anaphase, and how the products compare with mitosis.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give two ways in which anaphase 1 differs from anaphase in mitosis.
What happens during the interphase that precedes meiosis?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What happens during the interphase that precedes meiosis?
Model answer
The cell grows and makes the proteins and organelles it needs, and every chromosome is replicated into two identical sister chromatids joined at a centromere.
- 2
How many nuclear divisions take place in meiosis, and what does each achieve?
Model answer
There are two: meiosis 1 separates the homologous chromosomes and halves the chromosome number, and meiosis 2 separates the sister chromatids.
- 3
Describe the main events of prophase 1.
Model answer
The chromosomes condense, homologous chromosomes pair up to form bivalents, crossing over occurs at chiasmata, the nuclear envelope breaks down and the spindle forms.
- 4
What is a bivalent?
Model answer
A bivalent is a pair of homologous chromosomes lying alongside one another, so it contains four chromatids in total.
- 5
How are the chromosomes arranged at metaphase 1?
Model answer
The bivalents line up on the equator, with the two chromosomes of each pair on opposite sides of it, each attached to spindle fibres by its centromere.
- 6
What is separated during anaphase 1?
Model answer
Whole homologous chromosomes are pulled to opposite poles, each still made of two chromatids, because the centromeres do not divide at this stage.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in The Developing Individual: Meiosis, Growth and Development, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
