Overview
Recall questions on choice chamber investigations, measuring pulse rate and recovery time after exercise, random quadrat sampling and belt transects, percentage cover and frequency, mark-release-recapture and its assumptions, and the advantages of data loggers.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State two variables that must be controlled in a choice-chamber investigation of humidity.
Why is the same number of organisms placed in each half of a choice chamber at the start?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a choice chamber used to investigate?
Model answer
It is used to investigate the response of small invertebrates to a difference in conditions such as humidity or light, by recording where they settle.
- 2
State two variables that must be controlled in a choice-chamber investigation of humidity.
Model answer
Temperature and light intensity must be the same in both halves of the chamber.
- 3
Why are the organisms left for a set period before the numbers in each half are counted?
Model answer
They need time to move about and settle in their preferred conditions, so counting at once would record only where they were placed.
- 4
Why is the same number of organisms placed in each half of a choice chamber at the start?
Model answer
Any difference in the final distribution can then be attributed to their response rather than to the way they were introduced.
- 5
How is pulse rate measured without instruments?
Model answer
The radial artery at the wrist or the carotid artery in the neck is pressed lightly with the fingertips and the beats are counted over a measured time.
- 6
Why is a pulse counted for a full minute rather than for fifteen seconds and multiplied by four?
Model answer
Counting over a longer period reduces the proportional error introduced by miscounting a single beat.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Practical Skills, Apparatus and Techniques, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
