Overview
Recall questions on the composition of dialysis fluid and countercurrent flow, haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis compared, kidney transplants, tissue matching and immunosuppressants, living donors, and therapeutic cloning, its ethics, reproductive cloning and induced pluripotent stem cells.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How could therapeutic cloning be used to treat kidney failure?
Why does dialysis fluid contain glucose and mineral ions at the same concentrations as normal blood plasma?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why does dialysis fluid contain glucose and mineral ions at the same concentrations as normal blood plasma?
Model answer
With no concentration gradient for these substances there is no net diffusion out of the blood, so the patient does not lose the glucose and ions that the body needs.
- 2
Why does dialysis fluid contain no urea?
Model answer
So that there is a steep concentration gradient from the blood into the fluid and urea diffuses out of the blood as rapidly as possible.
- 3
What is the advantage of flowing the blood and the dialysis fluid in opposite directions?
Model answer
A countercurrent flow maintains a concentration gradient for urea along the whole length of the dialyser, so diffusion continues throughout rather than stopping once the two liquids reach equilibrium.
- 4
How does peritoneal dialysis work?
Model answer
Dialysis fluid is run through a permanent catheter into the abdominal cavity, where the peritoneum and its rich capillary network act as the partially permeable membrane so that urea and excess ions diffuse from the blood into the fluid, and after several hours the fluid is drained out and replaced.
- 5
Give two advantages of peritoneal dialysis over haemodialysis.
Model answer
It can be carried out at home or at work without a machine or a hospital visit, and because it runs continuously the composition of the blood is kept steadier, so dietary and fluid restrictions are less severe.
- 6
Give two disadvantages of peritoneal dialysis.
Model answer
The permanent catheter into the abdomen carries a serious risk of peritonitis, and exchanges of fluid must be carried out every day, several times a day.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Kidney Functions and Malfunctions, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
