Treating asthma and medicinal drugs from plants
- 3 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on beta agonists and their side effects, inhaled steroids and inhalers, theophylline from Theobroma cacao, topotecan from Camptotheca acuminata, aspirin from Salix, quinine from Cinchona, and why plants and rainforests matter as sources of drugs.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State two side effects of taking a beta agonist.
Name the drug obtained from Theobroma cacao and state what it is used to treat.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Explain how a beta agonist relieves the symptoms of an asthma attack.
Model answer
It binds to beta receptors on the smooth muscle of the bronchioles, causing the muscle to relax so the airways dilate and airflow is restored.
- 2
State two side effects of taking a beta agonist.
Model answer
A fine tremor of the hands and a raised heart rate with palpitations.
- 3
Explain how inhaled steroids reduce the frequency of asthma attacks.
Model answer
They suppress the chronic inflammation of the airway lining, reducing the number of inflammatory cells and the swelling and mucus secretion, so the airways become less hypersensitive to triggers.
- 4
Why must a steroid inhaler be used every day rather than only when symptoms appear?
Model answer
It takes days or weeks of regular use to reduce the inflammation, and it has no immediate bronchodilating effect, so it cannot relieve an attack that has already started.
- 5
Give two reasons why asthma drugs are given through an inhaler rather than as a tablet.
Model answer
The drug is delivered directly to the airways so it acts within minutes, and a much smaller dose is needed, which greatly reduces side effects elsewhere in the body.
- 6
Name the drug obtained from Theobroma cacao and state what it is used to treat.
Model answer
Theophylline, which is used in the treatment of asthma and COPD.
