B and T lymphocytes and the specific response
- 3 things to know
- Components 01, 02 and 03
Overview
Recall questions on where B and T lymphocytes are made and mature, clonal selection and expansion, plasma cells and memory cells, T helper, T killer and T regulatory cells, humoral and cell-mediated responses, and how the secondary response differs from the primary.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Into which two cell types does an activated B lymphocyte differentiate?
What is the function of a plasma cell?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Where are B and T lymphocytes made, and where does each type mature?
Model answer
Both are made from stem cells in the bone marrow; B lymphocytes mature in the bone marrow and T lymphocytes mature in the thymus gland.
- 2
What is meant by clonal selection?
Model answer
Clonal selection is the activation of only that lymphocyte whose receptor is complementary to the antigen present, out of the millions of different lymphocytes in the body.
- 3
What is clonal expansion?
Model answer
Clonal expansion is the repeated division by mitosis of the selected lymphocyte, producing a large population of genetically identical cells specific to that antigen.
- 4
Why is there a lag of one to two weeks before antibody appears in a first infection?
Model answer
The single lymphocyte specific to the antigen must first be selected and then divide many times before there are enough plasma cells to secrete a detectable amount of antibody.
- 5
Into which two cell types does an activated B lymphocyte differentiate?
Model answer
Into plasma cells and B memory cells.
- 6
What is the function of a plasma cell?
Model answer
A plasma cell secretes very large quantities of one specific antibody into the blood and lymph.

Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in The Immune System, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
