The Development of Species: Evolution and Classification

Classification and the species concept

  • 3 things to know
  • Components 01, 02 and 03

Overview

Recall questions on biological classification and the hierarchy of taxonomic ranks, binomial names such as Homo sapiens, the biological and phylogenetic species concepts and their limits, why a horse and donkey remain separate species, and why classification should reflect phylogeny.

What you need to know

Answer each one before you reveal it.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define biological classification.

    Model answer

Classification is the placing of organisms into groups on the basis of shared features, so that the diversity of life can be organised, named and studied.

  2. 2

List the taxonomic ranks in order from the largest to the smallest.

    Model answer

Domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species.

  3. 3

What is meant by saying that classification is hierarchical?

    Model answer

Each rank is contained wholly within the rank above it, the groups never overlap, and the groups become smaller and their members more similar as you move down the hierarchy.

  4. 4

State the rules for writing the binomial name of an organism.

    Model answer

The genus name comes first with an initial capital letter and the species name follows in lower case, and both are printed in italics or underlined when handwritten.

  5. 5

Give the binomial name of modern humans and explain what each part identifies.

    Model answer

Modern humans are Homo sapiens, where Homo names the genus to which the species belongs and sapiens identifies the particular species within that genus.

  6. 6

    State the biological species concept.

    Model answer

A species is a group of organisms with similar characteristics that can interbreed with one another to produce fertile offspring.
