Flash guns and defibrillators
- 3 things to know
- Unit A2 2
Overview
Two very different time constants involved in a flash gun and general principle these applications share.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is there a delay before a flash gun can be used again?
A flash gun releases 67.5 J of stored energy in 2.0 ms. Calculate the average power
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why is a capacitor used in an electronic flash gun?
Model answer
It stores energy slowly from a small battery and then releases it all in a few milliseconds, giving a burst of power far greater than the battery could supply.
- 2
Explain the two very different time constants involved in a flash gun.
Model answer
Charging is through a large resistance so the time constant is seconds, while discharge is through the very low resistance of the flash tube so the time constant is milliseconds.
- 3
Why is there a delay before a flash gun can be used again?
Model answer
The capacitor has to recharge through the large charging resistance, which takes several seconds.
- 4
A flash gun capacitor of 1500 μF is charged to 300 V. Calculate the energy stored.
Model answer
E = 0.5 × 1500 × 10⁻⁶ × 300², which is 0.5 × 1500 × 10⁻⁶ × 9.0 × 10⁴, giving 67.5 J.
- 5
Calculate the average power if that energy is released in 2.0 ms.
Model answer
P = E/t = 67.5 ÷ 2.0 × 10⁻³, which is 3.4 × 10⁴ W.
- 6
What does a defibrillator do?
Model answer
It passes a controlled pulse of charge through the heart to stop a chaotic rhythm, allowing the heart's own pacemaker to restart a normal beat.
