Nuclear power: social, environmental, security and economic issues
- 3 things to know
- Unit A2 1
Overview
Proliferation risk associated with civil nuclear power and two economic disadvantages of nuclear power.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is a nuclear station regarded as a security risk from terrorism?
Why is the comparison between nuclear power and renewable generation not simply a matter of cost per unit of electricity?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Give two environmental advantages of generating electricity by nuclear fission rather than by burning fossil fuels.
Model answer
A nuclear station emits almost no carbon dioxide while generating, so it does not contribute to the enhanced greenhouse effect, and it releases no sulfur dioxide or nitrogen oxides, so it does not cause acid rain.
- 2
Give an economic advantage of nuclear fuel over fossil fuel in terms of the quantity needed.
Model answer
The energy released per kilogram of uranium is millions of times greater than that from coal, so the fuel cost per unit of electricity is low and only very small quantities need to be transported and stored.
- 3
Why is a nuclear station well suited to supplying the baseload of a national grid?
Model answer
It runs continuously at a steady high output regardless of the weather or the time of day, unlike wind or solar generation, so it can supply the demand that is always present.
- 4
Give a security argument in favour of nuclear power for a country with few fossil fuel reserves.
Model answer
Uranium is obtained from a range of politically stable suppliers and only small quantities are needed, so a stock can be held for years and the country is less exposed to interruption of imported gas or oil.
- 5
State the main environmental disadvantage of nuclear fission and explain why it is difficult to solve.
Model answer
Fission produces high-level radioactive waste containing nuclides with half-lives of thousands of years, which must be isolated from the environment for far longer than any human institution has ever survived.
- 6
Why does the long half-life of some fission products make waste storage so demanding?
Model answer
The activity falls by only half in each half-life, so waste with a half-life of tens of thousands of years must be kept secure and intact for hundreds of thousands of years before it decays to a safe level.
