Measuring the acceleration of free fall with light gates
- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 1
Overview
Recall questions on the apparatus and procedure for the two-light-gate method, how the software gets the velocity at each gate, the two equations for g from the velocities, why the interrupt card must pass squarely through the beam, the trade-off in card length, and the main sources of uncertainty.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Outline the procedure for measuring the acceleration of free fall using two light gates and an interrupt card.
State the accepted value of the acceleration of free fall near the Earth's surface and explain why an experimental value is usually a little smaller.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the apparatus needed to measure the acceleration of free fall using light gates.
Model answer
A falling object carrying an interrupt card of measured length, two light gates clamped a measured vertical distance apart on a stand, a timer or datalogger running computer software, a metre rule and a soft landing pad are needed.
- 2
Outline the procedure for measuring the acceleration of free fall using two light gates and an interrupt card.
Model answer
The card length and the vertical separation of the gates are measured, the object is released from rest just above the upper gate, the software records the time the beam is blocked at each gate and the interval between them, and the run is repeated several times so a mean can be taken.
- 3
Explain how the computer software finds the velocity of the falling object at each light gate.
Model answer
The software divides the measured length of the interrupt card by the time for which that card blocks the beam, which gives the average velocity over the very short time the card takes to pass.
- 4
State the equation used to find g from the velocities at two light gates and the time between them, defining each symbol.
Model answer
The acceleration of free fall is g = (v₂ − v₁)/t, where v₁ and v₂ are the velocities at the upper and lower gates in m s⁻¹ and t is the time interval between the gates in seconds.
- 5
State the equation used to find g from the velocities at two light gates and their separation, defining each symbol.
Model answer
The acceleration of free fall is g = (v₂² − v₁²)/2h, where v₁ and v₂ are the velocities at the upper and lower gates in m s⁻¹ and h is the vertical separation of the gates in metres.
- 6
In a light-gate free-fall experiment the gate separation is varied and the velocity at the lower gate recorded each time. State what graph gives a straight line and what its gradient represents.
Model answer
A graph of v₂² on the vertical axis against the separation h on the horizontal axis is a straight line whose gradient is 2g and whose intercept on the vertical axis is v₁², so g is half the gradient.
