- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 1
Overview
Potential difference between two points in a circuit, equation relating potential difference, energy and charge and volt in terms of energy and charge.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define the potential difference between two points in a circuit.
Define the volt in terms of energy and charge.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the potential difference between two points in a circuit.
Model answer
The potential difference between two points is the electrical energy converted into other forms per unit charge passing between those points.
- 2
State the equation relating potential difference, energy and charge, and define every symbol with its unit.
Model answer
The equation is V = W/Q, where V is the potential difference in volts, W the energy transferred in joules and Q the charge that passes in coulombs.
- 3
Define the volt in terms of energy and charge.
Model answer
One volt is one joule of energy transferred per coulomb of charge passing, so 1 V = 1 J C⁻¹.
- 4
Write V = W/Q in the form used to find the energy transferred in a component.
Model answer
The rearranged form is W = QV, so the energy in joules is the charge in coulombs multiplied by the potential difference in volts.
- 5
Calculate the energy transferred when a charge of 5.0 C passes through a component with a potential difference of 12 V across it.
Model answer
The energy is W = QV = 5.0 × 12 = 60 J, and 60 J ÷ 5.0 C returns the 12 V potential difference as a check.
- 6
A lamp transfers 240 J of energy while a charge of 20 C passes through it. Calculate the potential difference across the lamp.
Model answer
The potential difference is V = W/Q = 240 ÷ 20 = 12 V, and 20 C × 12 V gives back 240 J as a check.
