Comparing electric and magnetic deflection
- 3 things to know
- Unit A2 2
Overview
Recall questions on the differences in what each force acts on, its direction relative to the field, and whether it can change the kinetic energy, the parabolic against the circular path, the balance condition v = E/B and why the charge cancels, and which field to use to select a speed and which to separate by charge to mass ratio.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How do the directions of the electric and magnetic forces on a charged particle relate to the field?
Which of the electric and magnetic forces can change the kinetic energy of a particle?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the main difference between the force on a charge in an electric field and in a magnetic field.
Model answer
The electric force acts on a charge whether it is moving or not, while the magnetic force acts only on a moving charge.
- 2
How do the directions of the two forces relate to the field?
Model answer
The electric force is along the field line, while the magnetic force is at right angles to both the field and the velocity.
- 3
Which of the two can change the kinetic energy of a particle?
Model answer
Only the electric force, because the magnetic force is always perpendicular to the motion and does no work.
- 4
What path does a charge follow when fired perpendicular into each field?
Model answer
A parabola in a uniform electric field and a circle in a uniform magnetic field.
- 5
Why is the path in the magnetic field a circle rather than a parabola?
Model answer
The magnetic force turns with the velocity so it always points to the centre, whereas the electric force keeps the same direction throughout.
- 6
Give the two force equations side by side.
Model answer
F = qE for the electric force and F = Bqv for the magnetic force on a charge moving at right angles to the field.
