Amplitude, period, frequency and wavelength
- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 2
Overview
Amplitude of a wave, wavelength of a wave and period of a wave.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define the wavelength of a wave.
Define the period of a wave.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the amplitude of a wave.
Model answer
The amplitude is the maximum displacement of a particle from its equilibrium position, measured in metres.
- 2
Define the wavelength of a wave.
Model answer
The wavelength λ is the shortest distance between two points on the wave that are oscillating in phase, measured in metres.
- 3
Define the period of a wave.
Model answer
The period T is the time taken for one complete oscillation of a particle, measured in seconds.
- 4
Define the frequency of a wave.
Model answer
The frequency f is the number of complete oscillations passing a point each second, measured in hertz.
- 5
State the equation linking frequency and period, defining each symbol.
Model answer
f = 1/T, where f is the frequency in hertz and T is the period in seconds.
- 6
A wave has a period of 0.025 s. Calculate its frequency.
Model answer
f = 1/T = 1/0.025 = 40 Hz, and 1/40 Hz returns a period of 0.025 s as given.
