Kinetic energy
- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 1
Overview
Recall questions on the definition and the equation, the factor of four when speed doubles and what that means for braking distance, whether kinetic energy is a scalar, showing that the units reduce to the joule, why it can never be negative, and worked calculations on a car, a golf ball, a bullet and a cyclist.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define kinetic energy.
State the equation for kinetic energy and define every symbol.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define kinetic energy.
Model answer
The kinetic energy of an object is the energy it has because of its motion, equal to the work that must be done on it to accelerate it from rest to its current speed.
- 2
State the equation for kinetic energy and define every symbol.
Model answer
Kinetic energy is k.e. = ½mv², where k.e. is in joules, m is the mass in kilograms and v is the speed in metres per second.
- 3
By what factor does the kinetic energy of an object change when its speed doubles?
Model answer
The kinetic energy becomes four times as large, because kinetic energy is proportional to the square of the speed.
- 4
Calculate the kinetic energy of a 1200 kg car travelling at 25 m s⁻¹.
Model answer
The kinetic energy is ½ × 1200 × 25² = 3.75 × 10⁵ J, and √(2 × 375 000 ÷ 1200) = 25 m s⁻¹, returning the given speed as a check.
- 5
Is kinetic energy a scalar or a vector, and what follows from that for two cars travelling in opposite directions at the same speed?
Model answer
Kinetic energy is a scalar, so the two cars have exactly the same kinetic energy; only their speeds matter and not the directions in which they travel.
- 6
A golf ball of mass 0.045 kg leaves the club with 3.6 × 10² J of kinetic energy. Calculate its speed.
Model answer
The speed is v = √(2 × 360 ÷ 0.045) = √16 000 = 126 m s⁻¹, and ½ × 0.045 × 126.5² = 360 J, returning the given energy as a check.
