What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Show how the equation P = Fv follows from the definition of power.
A crane lifts a 400 kg load through 12 m in 15 s. Calculate the useful output power.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define power and state the equation used to calculate it.
Model answer
Power is the rate of doing work, or the rate at which energy is transferred, and is calculated from P = work done ÷ time taken, where P is in watts, work is in joules and time is in seconds.
- 2
Define the watt and express it in SI base units.
Model answer
One watt is a rate of energy transfer of one joule per second, so 1 W = 1 J s⁻¹ = 1 kg m² s⁻³.
- 3
Show how the equation P = Fv follows from the definition of power.
Model answer
For a constant force moving through a distance s in time t the power is P = Fs/t, and since s/t is the speed v this becomes P = Fv, where F is the force in newtons and v the speed in metres per second.
- 4
A vehicle travels at a steady 18 m s⁻¹ with a driving force of 750 N. Calculate the useful output power of its engine.
Model answer
The power is P = Fv = 750 × 18 = 1.35 × 10⁴ W, or 13.5 kW, and 13 500 ÷ 18 returns the 750 N driving force as a check.
- 5
A crane lifts a 400 kg load through 12 m in 15 s. Calculate the useful output power.
Model answer
The work done is 400 × 9.81 × 12 = 47 088 J, so the power is 47 088 ÷ 15 = 3.14 × 10³ W, and 3139 W × 15 s = 47 088 J, confirming the result.
- 6
Define efficiency and explain why it has no unit.
Model answer
Efficiency is the useful energy or power output divided by the total energy or power input, and because it is a ratio of two quantities measured in the same unit those units cancel and the answer is a pure number, often expressed as a percentage.
