Centre of gravity
- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 1
Overview
Centre of gravity of an object and condition under which a tilted object will topple.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain the effect on a bus's stability of filling the upper deck with passengers while the lower deck stays empty.
Distinguish between the centre of mass and the centre of gravity of an object.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the centre of gravity of an object.
Model answer
The centre of gravity is the single point through which the whole weight of the object may be taken to act.
- 2
Why is the concept of centre of gravity useful when solving moments problems?
Model answer
It allows the weight, which is really spread over the whole body, to be replaced by one force acting at a single known point, so a single moment can be written for it.
- 3
Where is the centre of gravity of a uniform metre rule?
Model answer
It lies at the 50.0 cm mark, the midpoint of the rule, because the material is evenly distributed and the rule is symmetrical about that point.
- 4
Where is the centre of gravity of a uniform rectangular sheet of metal?
Model answer
It lies at the geometric centre of the rectangle, where the two diagonals cross.
- 5
Can the centre of gravity of an object lie outside the material of the object? Give an example.
Model answer
Yes it can; a uniform ring has its centre of gravity at the centre of the circle, where there is no material at all.
- 6
Describe how the centre of gravity of an irregular flat lamina is found in the laboratory.
Model answer
The lamina is hung freely from a small hole near its edge, a plumb line is hung from the same point and the vertical line is marked on the lamina; the process is repeated from two further holes, and the centre of gravity is where the marked lines cross.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo

Every question in Moments and Equilibrium, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
