Centripetal acceleration and centripetal force
- 3 things to know
- Unit A2 1
Overview
Recall questions on what centripetal acceleration is, the two equations a = v²/r and a = rω², the centripetal force equations, the direction of both, why a body moving at constant speed is still accelerating, why no work is done by the centripetal force, and what happens when the force is removed.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State the equation for centripetal force in terms of speed and define every symbol.
What is meant by centripetal acceleration?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by centripetal acceleration?
Model answer
Centripetal acceleration is the acceleration of a body moving in a circle, directed at every instant towards the centre of the circle, arising from the continuous change in the direction of the velocity.
- 2
State the two equations for centripetal acceleration and define every symbol.
Model answer
a = v²/r = rω², where a is the centripetal acceleration in m s⁻², v the linear speed in m s⁻¹, r the radius in metres and ω the angular velocity in rad s⁻¹.
- 3
State the equation for centripetal force in terms of speed and define every symbol.
Model answer
F = ma = mv²/r, where F is the centripetal force in newtons, m the mass in kilograms, v the linear speed in m s⁻¹ and r the radius of the circle in metres.
- 4
In which direction does the centripetal force on a body in uniform circular motion act?
Model answer
It acts along the radius towards the centre of the circle, at right angles to the velocity.
- 5
Why does a centripetal force do no work on a body in uniform circular motion?
Model answer
The force is always perpendicular to the direction of motion, so there is no displacement in the direction of the force and the kinetic energy of the body does not change.
- 6
Explain why a body moving at constant speed in a circle is nevertheless accelerating.
Model answer
Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity, and velocity is a vector. The direction of the velocity changes continuously round the circle, so the velocity changes even though its magnitude does not.
