Absolute and percentage uncertainty
- 3 things to know
- Units AS 3 and A2 3
Overview
Absolute uncertainty in a measurement and fractional uncertainty in a measurement.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How many significant figures should an uncertainty be quoted to, and how should the value it belongs to be written?
Explain why timing twenty oscillations rather than one reduces the percentage uncertainty in the period.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the absolute uncertainty in a measurement.
Model answer
The absolute uncertainty is the interval either side of the recorded value within which the true value is believed to lie, quoted in the same unit as the measurement itself.
- 2
Define the percentage uncertainty in a measurement and state how it is calculated.
Model answer
The percentage uncertainty is the absolute uncertainty divided by the measured value and multiplied by 100, and it has no unit because the two quantities in the ratio are measured in the same unit.
- 3
What is the fractional uncertainty in a measurement?
Model answer
It is the absolute uncertainty divided by the measured value, expressed as a decimal rather than as a percentage, so it is the percentage uncertainty divided by 100.
- 4
How is the uncertainty in a single reading estimated from the instrument used?
Model answer
For an analogue scale it is usually taken as half the smallest scale division, and for a digital display as one unit in the last digit shown, unless the reading is unsteady, in which case the spread of the fluctuation is used instead.
- 5
Why does a length measured on a metre rule carry an uncertainty of about 2 mm rather than 1 mm?
Model answer
The length is the difference between the readings at the two ends and each reading has its own uncertainty of about 1 mm, so the uncertainties add to give about 2 mm in the difference.
- 6
How is the uncertainty in a mean obtained from a set of repeated readings?
Model answer
It is taken as half the range of the readings, that is half the difference between the largest and the smallest value in the set.
