Lenses
Images formed by lenses
- 3 things to know
- Unit AS 2
Overview
Real image and virtual image.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does an observer see the virtual image produced by a magnifying glass?
What arrangement of object and lens is used in a camera, and what kind of image results?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Which three standard rays are used to locate the image formed by a converging lens?
Model answer
A ray from the top of the object parallel to the axis that passes through the principal focus after the lens, a ray through the optical centre that carries straight on, and a ray through the principal focus in front of the lens that emerges parallel to the axis.
- 2
Define a real image.
Model answer
A real image is one formed where rays of light actually cross, so it can be caught on a screen placed at that position.
- 3
Define a virtual image.
Model answer
A virtual image is one from which the rays only appear to diverge, so no light actually reaches its position and it cannot be caught on a screen.
- 4
An object is placed further from a converging lens than twice its focal length. Describe the image.
Model answer
The image is real, inverted and smaller than the object, and it lies between the principal focus and twice the focal length on the far side of the lens.
- 5
An object is placed at exactly twice the focal length from a converging lens. Describe the image.
Model answer
The image is real, inverted and exactly the same size as the object, and it lies at twice the focal length on the far side of the lens.
- 6
An object is placed between the principal focus and twice the focal length of a converging lens. Describe the image.
Model answer
The image is real, inverted and larger than the object, and it lies beyond twice the focal length on the far side of the lens.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Lenses, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
