Key term

Describe how the density of stomata on a leaf surface can be measured.

Key term

Describe the spongy mesophyll.

Key term

Why must the walls of the mesophyll cells stay moist?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Name the tissue layers of a dicotyledonous leaf in order from the upper surface to the lower.

    Model answer

They are the waxy cuticle, the upper epidermis, the palisade mesophyll, the spongy mesophyll and the lower epidermis with its own cuticle and its stomata.

  2. 2

What is the function of the cuticle of a leaf?

    Model answer

The cuticle is a waxy waterproof layer secreted by the epidermis that greatly reduces evaporation from the surface, and it is transparent so that light still reaches the cells beneath.

  3. 3

    Describe the spongy mesophyll.

    Model answer

The spongy mesophyll is a layer of loosely packed, irregularly shaped cells containing some chloroplasts, with large air spaces between them.

  4. 4

Why are the air spaces of the spongy mesophyll important in gas exchange?

    Model answer

They form a continuous system of air-filled channels connecting every mesophyll cell to a stoma, so carbon dioxide can diffuse in the gas phase right up to the cell walls, which is far faster than diffusion through liquid.

  5. 5

Why must the walls of the mesophyll cells stay moist?

    Model answer

Carbon dioxide has to dissolve in the film of water on the cell wall before it can diffuse into the cell.

  6. 6

What is the role of the vascular bundles in a leaf?

    Model answer

The xylem in them brings water and mineral ions to the mesophyll cells and the phloem carries the sugars away, and the bundles also act as a skeleton that holds the blade of the leaf out flat.

AThe radius is 0.20 mm.
BThe area of the field is π × 0.20² = 0.126 mm².
CThe density is 15 ÷ 0.126 = 119 stomata per mm².
