Genetic and molecular measures of biodiversity
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Term gene pool, polymorphic locus and monomorphic locus.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does genetic variety within a species matter?
What is a polymorphic locus?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the term gene pool.
Model answer
The gene pool is all the alleles of all the genes carried by every individual of a population at a given time.
- 2
Why does genetic variety within a species matter?
Model answer
A wider range of alleles makes it more likely that some individuals can survive a new disease or a change in conditions, so the species can adapt.
- 3
What is a polymorphic locus?
Model answer
A locus is polymorphic when two or more alleles of that gene occur in the population at an appreciable frequency.
- 4
How is the proportion of polymorphic loci calculated?
Model answer
The number of loci found to be polymorphic is divided by the total number of loci examined.
- 5
A survey of 200 loci finds 30 of them to be polymorphic. Calculate the proportion of polymorphic loci.
Model answer
30 divided by 200 gives 0.15, which is 15% of the loci examined.
- 6
Why does a low proportion of polymorphic loci worry a conservationist?
Model answer
It shows that the gene pool holds little variety, so the population is poorly placed to adapt and is vulnerable to a single disease.
