Classification and Biodiversity
Biodiversity, adaptation and natural selection
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
How natural selection has generated biodiversity, term adaptation and three types of adaptation shown by organisms.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Distinguish species richness from species diversity.
Give three levels at which biodiversity can be considered.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define biodiversity.
Model answer
Biodiversity is the number and variety of organisms found within a specified geographical region.
- 2
Distinguish species richness from species diversity.
Model answer
Species richness is simply the number of different species present, whereas species diversity also takes account of how many individuals of each species there are.
- 3
Give three levels at which biodiversity can be considered.
Model answer
The variety of ecosystems in a region, the number and variety of species within them, and the genetic variety within each species.
- 4
Why does biodiversity vary from one region to another?
Model answer
Climate, altitude, soil type, water availability and the level of human disturbance all differ, so different regions can support different numbers of species.
- 5
Where on land is biodiversity greatest, and why?
Model answer
It is greatest in tropical rainforest near the equator, where high temperature, high rainfall and stable conditions all year allow a great many niches to exist.
- 6
Give two reasons why biodiversity is low in polar regions.
Model answer
Temperatures are extremely low for most of the year, and the growing season is too short for high productivity.

Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Classification and Biodiversity, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
