Adaptations for Transport
The endodermis and the entry to the xylem
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Casparian strip and root pressure.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the Casparian strip?
Why is it useful for the Casparian strip to force water through the cytoplasm of the endodermis?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the endodermis?
Model answer
The single layer of cells surrounding the vascular tissue of a root.
- 2
What is the Casparian strip?
Model answer
A band of waterproof suberin in the radial and transverse walls of each endodermal cell.
- 3
What effect does the Casparian strip have on the apoplast pathway?
Model answer
It blocks it, so water reaching the endodermis in the cell walls must enter the cytoplasm to go further.
- 4
Why is it useful to force water through the cytoplasm at that point?
Model answer
The cell membrane can then control which solutes pass into the xylem, so what enters the plant's transport system is selected.
- 5
How does the endodermis allow the plant to select the ions it takes up?
Model answer
Membrane carrier proteins move particular ions into the cytoplasm and out towards the xylem, and anything they do not carry cannot pass.
- 6
What is root pressure?
Model answer
A positive pressure generated in the root that pushes water up the xylem.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Adaptations for Transport, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
